Kameha Con 2019
Jumping back over 20 years ago, I remember watching the Dragon Ball Z anime series on TV. Soon after, it jumped over to Cartoon Network with their Toonami programming and that’s about the time the popularity grew… at least in my area. Who else remembers Toonami and Tom 5? At that time, I collected the action figures and started wearing DBZ shirts, along with purchasing the DVDs and movies as soon as they were available. I did pick up the Dragon Ball series and the first few seasons of Dragon Ball Z.
Fast forward to more recent times, my son started getting into the Dragon Ball franchise and so did many others as the franchise popularity rose back up with Dragon Ball Super. I am not exactly sure how he came to find out about a fairly new convention on its second year that celebrates everything in the Dragon Ball universe — Kameha Con, but attending this con was what he asked for as his birthday present. We headed north to Irving on Friday night with plans to attend the con that Saturday and Sunday.
That Saturday morning, April 12, we woke up earlier and headed to the Irving Convention Center right down the street and was greeted with a long line of other con-goers eagerly waiting for opening time. Neither one of us was fully dressed up in any outfits — both of us wearing a Dragon Ball shirt, but my son did have on a brown monkey tail around his waist that his sister made for him. Later on, he did get a compliment from one of the attending cosplayers on how “big” his tail was… everyone in the area broke out with laughter lol. For the most part, we walked around the exhibitors’ area checking out the vendors and artists that were set up here along with taking photos of cosplayers. To wrap up day one, we finished with the cosplay contest which happened to be hosted by Tiffany Vollmer. For those that are unfamiliar with who she is, she’s the English voice of Bulma in the Dragon Ball franchise.
The next day, we decided to make our purchases and continue to see all the cosplayers attending. While we continued to start downstairs in the exhibitors’ area, we did check out the upper floors and made sure to catch one panel that my son wanted to attend, which was the “Train like Goku” discussion panel. Afterward, we made our rounds back to the vendors to make our purchases before wrapping it up and head back. If you are a fan of Dragon Ball, you don’t want to miss this con. Next year’s dates will be May 1st through the 3rd, see you then!
